"Ice City" is another name for Harbin. Chinese skiing began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and Harbin was the first stop for modern European ice and snow sports to enter China.
Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, General Secretary Xi Jinping has attached great importance to the development of ice and snow sports in China. In February 2014, Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics and met with International Olympic Committee President Bach. It was during this visit that he first proposed the idea of "leading 300 million people to participate in ice and snow sports."
"Turn 300 million people to participate in ice and snow sports" is called the largest popularization of ice and snow sports in human history by the international sports community. Since the successful hosting of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, as of April 2024, the number of participants in ice and snow sports nationwide reached 313 million, with an participation rate of 22.13%.
