On April 18, 2025, the National Botanical Garden celebrated its third anniversary of its unveiling operation. The reporter learned from the National Botanical Garden today (April 18) that the main building of the National Plant Germplasm Resources Library located on the west side of the National Botanical Garden (North Park) is expected to be completed within the year and is scheduled to be trial operation by the end of 2026.
National Plant Germplasm Resource Library The total area of the National Plant Germplasm Resource Library covers a total area of 60,000 square meters and has a total construction area of 11,000 square meters. It is the largest single germplasm resource library with the largest planned storage capacity in my country. According to the functional characteristics, the main body of the building is equipped with five major divisions: facility storage area, inventory preparation area, business research area, academic exchange area and science popularization display area. Among them, the facility storage areas include low-temperature storage, ultra-low-temperature storage, test tube seedlings, and genetic material storage libraries; the inventory preparation areas include seed pretreatment areas, genetic material treatment areas, test tube seedling treatment areas, etc. In order to ensure that the national plant germplasm resource library is put into operation as soon as possible after completion, the national plant germplasm resource library preparation library was completed and started operation at the end of last year.

The reporter learned that at present, the National Plant Germplasm Resource Library Preparation Library has collected nearly 10,000 copies of wild plant germplasm resources and DNA materials in total. After the National Plant Germplasm Resource Library is officially completed and put into operation, it is planned to collect more than 70,000 plant germplasm resources from all over the world within 30 to 50 years, with a total of about 2 million, covering 80% of China's higher plant species and 10% of the world's higher plant species, including 1.1 million plant seeds, 50,000 test tube seedling germplasm, 630,000 DNA, 70,000 live plant plants, 80,000 pollen and spores, and 70,000 ultra-low temperature preservation of plant tissues, organs, plant microorganisms and other germplasm, which can achieve safe preservation of threatened plants, endemic plants, global rare and endangered plants, and plant germplasm resources with important utilization value in my country.
